It is the reward system's calibration. The common interpretation — that the current accomplishments are not meaningful enough, that what is needed is a more significant target — is the brain's own rationalization of the pattern. The person pursues the bigger goal, reaches it, and the architecture produces the same result. At some point the accumulation of evidence makes the real pattern undeniable: the flatness is not about the goals. It is about the system doing the rewarding.

Can I address this while maintaining my current pace of work and life?

Yes. The work does not require dismantling the career, slowing the output, or restructuring how you operate professionally. Achievement anhedonia is a calibration problem in the reward system's architecture, and addressing it does not require removing the conditions that produced it.
