Research has shown that individuals with chronic anxiety often have an overactive DMN, contributing to constant worry and stress.

Amygdala

The amygdala is a small, almond-shaped structure located deep within the brain, playing a crucial role in our emotional processing, particularly concerning fear and anxiety. The amygdala’s primary function is to assess potential environmental threats and initiate a response to ensure our safety.

When the amygdala perceives a threat, it sends a signal to other parts of the brain, such as the hypothalamus, which activates the fight or flight response.

This response prepares our body to react quickly to danger by increasing our heart rate, breathing, and releasing stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline.

The amygdala may be overly sensitive for individuals with anxiety disorders, leading to an exaggerated response to perceived threats. This heightened sensitivity can cause persistent anxiety and worry, even in the absence of real danger.

This complex interplay between various brain regions, particularly the default mode network and the amygdala, lies behind all worry and anxiety.
